Chapter Seventeen
Gavin sat at the kitchen table staring down at the letter in his hands. He should have known. His paperboy never laid his paper nicely on his doormat. It was always out in the dew-covered grass. Shit, heâd once found it in the lower limbs of the tree in his front yard. So yeah, it should have struck him as suspicious that it was placed neatly in the middle of his welcome mat when Lex had picked it up while dropping Gavin off that afternoon.
Opening the paper to check out the entertainment section, so he could to see if there was a movie he could take Lex to for a second date, an envelope addressed with very familiar handwriting fell out.
Heâd seen too many lists and balanced too many checkbooks over the years not to recognize Cassieâs handwriting. Dropping it like it was on fire, he squelched the urge to stomp on it before he, instead, picked it up again. Now he was just staring at it, fearing what heâd read once he got up the nerve to open it.
They were just words, he told himself one more time as he pulled the flap open and took out the single sheet of paper. Gavin had gotten what he wanted when Lex agreed to a relationship with him, but the letter in his hands felt like the past trying to pull him back and away from the man he wanted for his future. A faint whiff of Cassieâs perfume made Gavinâs stomach lurch like he was on a roller coaster instead of sitting on one of his kitchen chairs. Closing his eyes, he took a couple of breaths, and that scent brought back memoriesâones that he cherished, not the most recent ones that made him sick.
Dear Gavin,
Iâm so sorry for everything Iâve put you through. I know nothing I can say would ever be enough for you to forgive me, but I need you to know that I have never stopped loving you. I know itâs no excuse, but I was going through a very rough time, and now that Iâve gotten the help I so desperately needed, I can see that what I did to you was wrong.
I know I shouldnât ask, but Iâd like for us to get together. I would like to apologize in person. I would really like to see you again. Iâve missed you so much, Gavin. I know I said some things that hurt you, and I want you to know I never meant any of them. Now that Iâm on medication, my moods are more stable. I wish you would consider giving me another chance, but if you canât, then please at least let me tell you how very sorry I am face-to-face.
Iâm staying with my parents for the time being. Please call me? I know you are a good, kind man so I will wait for your call.
Love you,
Cassie
Gavin was trembling by the time he finished reading Cassieâs words. That was his Cassie, not the cold bitch who had been putting him through hell.
